About the work

I've been drawing for about 40 years now, the last 10 of those as a professional artist. Charcoal is a messy medium by nature β€” it smudges, it drifts, it gets everywhere if you let it. Learning to actually control it, to pull sharp detail and real depth out of something that wants to blur, is what keeps me coming back to it. That tension between the medium's chaos and the precision it takes to tame it is where the satisfaction is.

When a drawing comes together, it's because that control finally lets the details do their job β€” a highlight in an eye, the texture of hair or fabric, the small things that make a still image feel like it's actually looking back at you.

I have no formal training beyond a basic art class in high school β€” everything since has come from trial and error and a lot of practice. I'm drawn to surreal artists like Salvador DalΓ, but my own specialty sits in realism, particularly portrait work.

Long before I started drawing professionally, I was a founder and guitarist of the heavy band Nemo, and then started The Avett Brothers with Scott and Seth Avett, playing guitar in the band until 2001.

My work has been displayed in the WWE Hall of Fame exhibit at WrestleMania in 2017, the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in Wichita Falls, Texas, and A Christmas Story House & Museum. I also won the Creations of Cornette art contest, and my drawing of Chyna was one of the winning designs in her fan art T-shirt contest.
